Paul Billowes

Admiralty Manager

Paul has worked at sea as a deck officer with P&O, serving on general cargo, reefer and passenger vessels before working in their bulk carrier and tanker fleet. He started work in an International law firm in London in 1982. His main casualty work includes collision, navigational error, unsafe port and salvage cases, including CTL and ATL claims. The more high-profile cases he has worked on include damaged chemical tankers seeking ports of refuge, the capsize and sinking of a car-carrier in the North Sea, the breaking in two of MOL Comfort, the loss of the Capesize Alexandros T, the Costa Concordia and the fire on Norman Atlantic. He has also worked on collisions with warships, well-heads and pipe-laying barges, oil-rig salvage cases (hurricane Katrina), the loss of a jack-up rig from the deck of a heavy lift vessel and tankers, gas ships and FPSOs breaking free of their mooring systems. With the introduction of ever more modern technology Paul’s investigations are becoming increasingly forensic, and often include detailed enquiries into due diligence, the SMS paper trail, auditing and limitation issues.
