Fred is a Master Mariner with command experience sailing on a wide variety of vessels including Passenger, Offshore and Container vessels. His varied seafaring experience spans fourteen years and includes ice navigation experience in both hemispheres.


Prior to joining Stann, Fred previously worked for a world leading marine consultancy, undertaking a variety of roles which spanned investigations, including the analysis of a high-profile subsea cable incident. Fred has undertaken causation investigations which have included groundings, vessel collisions, and incidents including fatalities.

An experienced ship handler, Fred is Podded Ship Handling and DP Qualified. He has considerable experience in bridge resource management, having overseen the transition from traditional paper chart orientated bridges to Fully Integrated/ECDIS bridge setups and the associated digitalisation of the vessel bridge environment to e-Navigation.

Fred’s experience on offshore vessels includes command experience of an anchor handler serving an offshore installation, in addition to numerous rig move operations and platform supply vessels, primarily working within the North Sea. Fred has a vast range of experience, working with Semi-Submersible and Jack Up drilling rigs, as well as heading control, towing and pre-lays operations.  He has also been involved with offshore platform decommissioning projects and has been heavily involved with the planning and setup for the tow out of platforms in the North Sea.
